Finn Legacy Society

In the 1880s, William Finn and his wife, Elizabeth, through their estate plan, gave 160 acres of land to Archbishop John Ireland for a college. The College of St. Thomas was established on this land in 1885. Since then, the St. Thomas has been blessed with bequests and other planned gifts from more than 600 benefactors following in the Finns' footsteps. These gifts are essential to maintaining a strong endowment and the solid, long-term support that will ensure that St. Thomas will continue to educate students to be morally responsible leaders who think critically, act wisely and work skillfully to advance the common good.

FOUR EASY WAYS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

You don't have to be wealthy to make a meaningful difference in the lives of St. Thomas students.

Did you know that you can:

  • Save for retirement and support the University of St. Thomas at the same time?

  • Make a gift that costs you nothing during your lifetime?

  • Select one of four easy ways to remember St. Thomas in your estate plan and join the Finn Legacy Society:

    1. Remember the University of St. Thomas in your will or revocable trust. By updating your existing will or trust to include St. Thomas through a simple codicil or amendment, you can open the doors of St. Thomas to many students. We've created sample bequest language to make it easy.

    2. Name the University of St. Thomas as the beneficiary of a retirement account, IRA or other asset account. Changing a beneficiary designation is one of the simplest ways in which to make a difference at St. Thomas.

    3. Fund a charitable gift annuity, which is a life-income gift arrangement involving a simple one-page contract between you and St. Thomas. In exchange for a gift of cash or stock, and an income-tax deduction, St. Thomas pays you and/or other beneficiaries a guaranteed income for life, after which St. Thomas receives your gift.

    4. A POD (payable-on-death) or TOD (transfer-on-death) allocation allows you to name the University of St. Thomas or other beneficiaries on your bank or brokerage account with a simple form.

If you would like to become a member of the Finn Legacy Society and make a legacy gift to ensure that the mission of St. Thomas continues for generations to come, contact our Planned Giving department.
